[Infostock Daily= Reporter Lee Dong-hee] Samsung Electronics has started mass production of mobile DRAMs with 16GB (gigabyte) capacity for the first time in the world, the first mobile DRAMs with the highest speed and maximum capacity ever.
Samsung Electronics announced on the 25th that it started producing 16GB LPDDR5 mobile DRAM at Pyeongtaek plant in Gyeonggi Province.
“After launching the world’s first 12GB mobile DRAM in July last year, Samsung Electronics has grown its premium memory market by mass-producing the industry’s only 16GB mobile DRAM in five months,” Samsung said.
The new mobile DRAM is 1.3 times faster than the mobile DRAM on high-end smartphones. The processing capacity is increased from 12GB to 16GB while maintaining the information processing speed (5,500Mb per second) of the fifth generation product (LPDDR5).
Compared to the existing 8GB LPDDR4X package, the capacity has doubled and the power consumption has decreased by more than 20%.
The DRAM processes 44GB of data, about nine full HD-class movies (5GB), in a second, the company explained. It was installed in the US product of the Galaxy S20 Ultra, a premium smartphone launched this month.
Samsung Electronics said, "When you are playing survival shooting games, you can see and respond to distant objects more quickly, so that you can feel the game performance of console game level with flagship smartphone."
Samsung Electronics will mass-produce 16GB LPDDR5, 1.5 times faster than the previous one, in a 10-nanometer (1z) process for the third generation in line with the development of 6400Mbps driving application processor (AP) from the second half of this year. Flagship mobile, high-end PC, and automobile market demand.
"We are able to provide the industry's best mobile solution to provide amazing satisfaction to next-generation flagship smartphone users," said Choi Chul, vice president of strategic marketing at Samsung Electronics' memory division. "We will provide a new lineup with next-generation processes in the year, "He said.
