Samsung Electronics plans to launch a premium AP under development with AMD in the second half of the year.
According to market research firm Strategy Analytics (SA) on the 12th, Samsung Electronics' share (based on sales) in the smartphone AP market last year was 9.7%. Its market share fell 2.3% compared to 2019, and its ranking also fell one notch to fifth place. AP is a core semiconductor responsible for data communication and computation in smartphones.
Qualcomm and MediaTech are competing with Samsung Electronics in the market. The System LSI division in charge of Samsung Electronics' AP business is pushing to supply APs to Chinese companies in addition to its smartphones.
Samsung Electronics is planning to unveil its new Exynos AP, which is under development in cooperation with AMD in the U.S., as early as the second half of this year and seek a rebound.
Samsung Electronics signed a joint development agreement with AMD, which has strengths in GPU design, in 2019 to improve graphics performance, which was cited as a weakness of Exynos AP.
Samsung Electronics' new AP, which is under development with AMD, is likely to be adopted in Samsung Electronics' flagship smartphones such as the Galaxy Z Fold 3 (tentative name), which is scheduled to be released in the second half of this year.
