[Infostock Daily=Reporter Park Jeong-Do] Samsung Heavy Industries said on the 19th that it conducted a test to remotely and autonomously operate the "SAMSUNG T-8," which is 38 meters long and weighs 300 tons, in waters near the Geoje shipyard, and that the ship returned safely from its destination 10 kilometers away without crew intervention.
The demonstration was conducted simultaneously at the Geoje shipyard and the remote control center of the Daejeon Ship and Ocean Research Center using the remote autonomous operation system "SAS" developed by Samsung Heavy Industries with its own technology.
SAS analyzes signals from navigation communication equipment such as radar mounted on ships, GPS (Satellite Location Information System), and AIS (Automatic Ship Identification System) in real time to recognize surrounding ships and obstacles.
It then evaluates the risk of collision to find the optimal avoidance route, and allows the ship to sail to its destination on its own with automatic control of propulsion and steering devices.
