Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Kim Ki-nam, who oversees Samsung Electronics' semiconductor division, met with reporters at KES 2021, the nation's largest electronics exhibition held at COEX in Gangnam-gu, Seoul on the 26th.
Taylor City in Texas, is likely to be chosen for new semiconductor factory; however, he hinted that it may take longer to finalize the site for the new factory.
Samsung Electronics announced its semiconductor investment plan in the U.S. at the business round table held before the Korea-U.S. summit in May.
The Taylor City Council has recently passed a bill to provide Samsung Electronics tax benefits and dedicated water line for the new plant. The bill will provide property tax cut of 92.5% for the first 10 years, 90% for the next 10 years, and 85% there after.
The U.S. Department of Commerce earlier called on global semiconductor companies, including Samsung Electronics, to provide survey data containing "Three Major Customers and Orders," " Inventory of Major Products" and " Expansion Plans" to manage the semiconductor supply chain transparently.
The U.S. Department of Commerce indicated that the submission of the information is voluntary. Companies in the industry perceive this requirement as coercive.
Taiwan's TSMC, the world's No. 1 semiconductor foundry company, expressed that it will refuse to submit the information to the U.S. government through various channels. The company recently decided to reverse the decision and submit it.
"TSMC has decided to submit information on semiconductor inventory, orders, and sales to the U.S. Department of Commerce," Taiwanese media outlet reported on 25th.
With TSMC's decision, the pressure on Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix by the US government will be increased. The industry experts believe that both companies will submit the information along with TSMC.
