General Motors (GM) is expected to charge LG Electronics and LG Energy Solutions for replacing battery modules as it declared a recall of Bolt electric vehicles.

LG said it will cooperate to ensure that the recall measures are carried out smoothly, adding that the share of recall costs will be set depending on the results of the investigation.

According to related industries and foreign media on the 22nd, GM, a U.S. automaker, announced on the 20th (local time) that it will recall an additional 73,000 Chevrolet Bolt electric vehicles at a cost of $1 billion (about 1.1835 trillion won).

It began an additional recall of 69,000 2017-2019 volt electric vehicles sold around the world at the end of last year, less than a month after it decided to replace some defective battery modules.

Subject to the recall are 2019-2022 models sold in the U.S. and Canada. GM conducted a software update service once through an investigation into LG Energy Solutions that supplied batteries due to a fire in Bolt EV last year and the cause of the fire, but eventually decided to recall it after a fire broke out in the updated vehicle.

The cost of replacing battery modules following the recall is expected to total $1.8 billion (about KRW 2.13 trillion). GM is reportedly going to charge LG for the recall.
