Samsung Electronics will mass produce the world's first "4th generation (1a) 10-nanometer DRAM" that was known to be first developed by Micron.

According to the Infostock daily coverage on the 14th, it has been confirmed that Samsung Electronics is equipped with process facilities needed to mass-produce 1a-nano-class DRAMs since last year, and it will start initial production in the third quarter after securing the yield.

The 1a nano DRAM, which Samsung Electronics will mass produce, has been widely promoted that Micron succeeded to produce from its semiconductor plant in Taiwan in January.

However, Micron has neither purchased semiconductor manufacturing equipments from global suppliers nor displayed the DRAM from initial production. 

For this reason, the global semiconductor industry has raised suspicions that Micron might announced experimental production at the research institute as the initial production.

"There is no way to verify Micron's claim at the moment until we see the real product. If the production yield is not accurate, it can only be seen as successful at the level of the research institute," said Choi Yang-oh, an adviser at Hyundai Research Institute.

"It will take more than a year to move from the level to mass production." Advisor Choi added, "Maybe Micron failed to mass produce the first 1a DRAM, which is considered as the world's most advanced DRAM process technology."

Samsung Electronics said, "We are preparing for the first mass production of 1a D RAM, but the timing of mass production has not been set at the moment."
