Following Hyundai Motor Co.'s Ulsan plant, Kia Motors Corp.'s plant in the U.S. will also suspend operations for two days next week.
This is due to the deepening global supply shortage of semiconductors.
According to Reuters and other foreign media on the 4th, Kia plans to temporarily shut down its plant in Georgia to stabilize its supply chain.
Reuters reported that Kia's decision was due to a shortage of automotive chips. The shortage was triggered by automakers failing to predict demand. While global automakers have greatly reduced their production and inventory due to the Covid-19, semiconductor manufacturers have created an imbalance as they focus on responding to high-yield products such as smartphones, PCs, and servers.
Foreign media reported that the U.S. government is seeking measures to ease the impact of supply shortages with semiconductor companies such as Samsung Electronics and Taiwan's TSMC.
