[Infostock Daily=Reporter Park Jeong-do] Samsung Electronics has decided to set up a EUV-only system LSI plant in the U.S.
According to Samsung Electronics and related industries on the 18th, Samsung Electronics will establish a semiconductor plant in Austin, USA that uses EUV (extreme ultraviolet) equipment exclusively.
Austin's EUV-only plant, which will be built this time, is confirmed to manufacture non-memory semiconductors and systems LSI.
Samsung Electronics decided to invest in the new plant with a production capacity of 70K and a total of 10 billion dollars (about 12 trillion won).
"Having recently secured more than 95% of the yield for EUV processes, the new EUV-only system LSI plant, which will be built in Austin, is expected to provide tailwinds to the exponentially growing foundry business," said an official familiar with Samsung Electronics' internal affairs.
Experts also say that it is an appropriate investment.
"It should be noted that Apple has recently designed related products on their own and Huawei's HiSilicon has been removed technically from the market," said Dr. Choi Yang-oh at Hyundai Research Institute. "Austin's EUV-only system LSI production plant is a timely investment that takes into account a surge in non-memory demand when the 5G era begins in earnest.".
