[Infostock Daily=Reporter Park Jeong-Do] Yoo Myung-hee, head of trade negotiations at the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, passed the first round in the WTO general election, Reuters and Bloomberg reported.
Foreign sources quoted sources as saying that senior WTO officials did not get the support needed for three candidates, including Mexico's Hessus Seade, Egypt's Hamid Mamdu and Moldova's Tudor Ulianovski, to advance to the second round.
As a result, five candidates, including the head of the United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia, Kenya and Nigeria, will compete for the third round of selection of two candidates.
The WTO is expected to officially announce the results of the first round this evening, after a general board meeting and a delegation meeting today.
The election of the next secretary general is expected to be completed by early November at the latest.
