[Infostock Daily=Reporter Park Jeong-Do] Samsung Electronics won all of Qualcomm's 5th generation (5G) smartphone application processor (AP) chips, a semiconductor design company. This is the first time Samsung has won all of Qualcomm's next-generation flagship products, and the order amount is known to be 1 trillion won.
According to the semiconductor industry on the 13th, Samsung Electronics' foundry division won Qualcomm's contract to commission the entire production of AP chip Snapdragon 875 (tentative name) for 5G smartphones. Samsung Electronics is known to have started mass production of Snapdragon 875 using extreme ultraviolet exposure equipment in the Gyeonggi Province Hwaseong foundry line.
Snapdragon 875, which is scheduled to be released in December this year, is expected to enter Samsung Electronics' next-generation 5G smartphone Galaxy S21, as well as premium smartphones of Chinese manufacturers such as Xiaomi and Oppo.
Samsung Electronics recently won a contract to produce the Snapdragon 4, an AP chip for low-end smartphones, following the Qualcomm 5G modem chip X60 production contract earlier this year, but this was part of the deal and this is the first time for all orders.
Qualcomm has been relying on TSMC for premium products, and for the first time, it has been recognized for its technology and entrusted its flagship products to Samsung Electronics.
Meanwhile, Samsung Electronics' foundry division has recently won orders for large-scale customer products and is increasing its market share.
Last month, IBM decided to take over production of the next generation of server central processing units (CPUs) "Power 10" in the United States, and earlier this month, it won orders for NVIDIA's new graphics processing units (GPUs).
