[Infostock Daily = Reporter Kim Jong Hyo] ILJIN Composites, a producer of composite materials affiliated with ILJIN Group, announced on the 4th that it has been selected as a supplier of hydrogen storage systems for Hyundai Motor's hydrogen-electric police buses and medium- and long-distance wide-area buses.
The order is the second of its kind since it was selected as a supplier of fuel tanks and modules for Hyundai Motor's hydrogen-electric city buses in May last year. Under the government's hydrogen economy roadmap, 40,000 hydrogen-powered buses will be available by 2040, and 20,000 medium- and long-distance buses will be available by 2030. "As the only company in Korea that specializes in composite materials that mass-produces fuel tanks for hydrogen-powered vehicles, we plan to expand related facilities according to the hydrogen economy roadmap," ILJIN Composites explained.
The company's hydrogen fuel tank is a ‘Type 4’ fuel tank that is made by wrapping carbon fiber in cylindrical containers of high-strength plastic materials. The company explains that the weight is more than 60% lighter and 10 times higher in strength than the existing ‘Type 1’ fuel tank, which is made by welding metal.
